
May 14, 2004- On May 14, 2004 at approximately 1:25AM Owensville Police Dept. Deputy Marshal Rodger Leister was attempting to make a traffic stop in the town of Johnson when the vehicle turned off its lights and fled. Officer Leister along with Gibson County Sheriff's Deputies Bruce Vanoven, Bryan Ellis, and Ft. Branch Reserve Deputy Marshal Steven Parker searched the area for the vehicle. The vehicle was located unoccupied behind the Merle L. McCarty residence in Johnson. Gibson County Deputy Tim Coomer and K-9 officer Bo were called to the scene to search for any suspects. The officers investigated further and found a methamphetamine lab. Merle L. McCarty, 60 of Johnson was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance methamphetamine, possession of precursors, manufacturing methamphetamine, illegal storage of anhydrous ammonia, and maintaining a common nuisance. McCarty is currently being held in the Gibson County Jail with no bond.
