Reserve Deputy

Gibson County Sheriff George A. Ballard ('83-'90 & '95-2002), as authorized under Indiana Code 36-8-3-20, instituted the Gibson County Sheriff's Department Reserve Deputy Program on January 1, 1983.

The purpose of the program is to give aid and support to the Gibson County Sheriff's Department. The members of the Reserve Deputy Unit are approved and trained under the authority of the Sheriff.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older
Must complete a Reserve Deputy Application and submit it to the Reserve Deputy Advisory Board, who will make a written recommendation to the Sheriff
If the Sheriff approves the application and the candidate meets all other qualifications, he/she will be sworn in as vacancies occur
Must volunteer twelve (12) hours every month in any Sheriff's Department related detail
Must take a written examination, provide an eye exam, pass a physical administered by a licensed physician and pass a physical ability test
Must pass the Indiana pre-basic 40-hour class and qualify with duty weapons

TRAINING

Each Reserve Deputy is expected to attend the monthly/quarterly Reserve Deputy training meeting. A minimum of sixteen (16) hours of in-service training must also be met on an annual basis. The list of possible in-service training topics includes, but is not limited to:
